I’ve seen a growing amount of spam in online social media:

Social bookmarking sites are being overrun with thousands of posts with spammy sites offering no real value. Social media sites are being hit too.  People wanting to increase traffic are filling these sites with content only for 2 purposes: 1 - To scream “BUY MY STUFF” or 2 - To grab links to junk websites. Social networking sites like myspace & Facebook have taken aggressive measures to prevent people from doing automated mass friend adding and blasting huge volumes of messages.

There’s no question that these kind of blackhat spam tactics can really work in the short term, but what are the long term consequences? Look at the 1-week statistic.  The overall Alexa rating you see on the main page is a rolling average over the previous 90 days.  90 days ago the site didn’t even exist and then when it started out it was at something crazy like a 10,000,000 rating.  So to see what a site is actually doing at this very moment you need to look at the weekly or daily stat.
